My name is Harrison Zuckerberg and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was just 3 years old.
By the age of six I realized that people didn't really know about the unique characteristics of Type 1 Diabetes. Therefore, I made it my goal to enlighten the nation to the realities of living with Type 1 by creating the T-1 Luminary Enlightenment event. I figured, if people don’t know that there is a Type 1 Diabetes that needs a cure then how can we expect to get one? This is an impactful event for everyone affected by Type 1 because, for one day each year, the world will be “enlightened”about Type 1 Diabetes.
I decided to create awareness by lighting "T-1" luminary bags on the stone wall in front of my house. I chose my birthday, November 5th, as the enlightenment day - which also happens to fall during diabetes awareness month. The T-1 bags served as a conversation starter to explain the dramatic difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This quickly lead to family and friends across the country displaying T-1 luminary bags in their towns. In 2010 I achieved my goal of having bags lit in all 50 states and in 2014, when a family friend visited Antarctica, I achieved my goal of haven them lit on all seven continents.
As you will see from the rest of the site, I would be honored if you helped me spread awareness, light luminaries in your town and, most importantly... send me your T-1 pictures - especially those in front of famous landmarks around the world, or with notable people and celebrities. Together we'll enlighten the world and make the world an easier place for those with Type 1 Diabetes.
